Remnants of Slavery

Remnants of Slavery serves as a prototype viewing platform for digital scans of objects from Université Cheikh Anta Diop and their archaeological collection from Gorée Island housed in Institut Fondamental d’Afrique Noire (IFAN).

The artifacts currently displayed were scanned through a partnership between IFAN and Michigan State University’s MATRIX Center for Digital Humanities and Social Sciences. Each object can be viewed using the gathered photogrammetric data, providing a color-accurate “skin” to the 3D model, or a rendered mesh-and-tile “skin” that allows for better visualization of the object’s surface detail.

The development of the project relied on a number of open source tools.  The site’s main framework was a specialized bootstrap package that was originally developed for the Digital Atlas of Egyptian Archaeology project (http://matrix-msu.github.io/daea). The object scans came from the aforementioned joint project between IFAN and MATRIX using a photogrammetry setup as well as the Sense and iSense scanners from Cubify. Finally, JSC3D was used for the project’s 3D object viewer
